Kobo wise, Naira foolish

Naira NotesIn the world of personal finance, the consensus approach to wealth is not based on how much you earn but on how wise you spend. If you earn 50K per month and you spend 20K on assets, with time, your assets become your source of income – this is regarded as freedom – when the income from your asset takes care of your everyday bills. This may appear as a “text book” reality because hardly do people reach the point where their assets takes care of their everyday bill. The reasons for these are not farfetched;

  1. Peer Pressure: Our present realities are dictated by our buddies. I cannot be patient driving a 1994 Camry when my friend is driving 2010 X8 (It’s unheard of!) Forget about servicing my asset column; I gus to be big!
  2. Nigerian reality: All those books (e.g. Think and Grow rich; Science of getting rich) don’t make practical sense – we live in communal setting in Nigeria with numerous mouths to feed from siblings to wife’s relatives. Which money do we have to furnish the asset column?
  3. Asset Definition: Since most of us cannot truly differentiate an asset from a liability. Our minds are locked to certain products as assets e.g. stocks, house, land, etc. this particular line of thought may be our downfall to experiencing income from the asset column. Imagine 2 million Naira stuck in stocks since 2007 and all you collect is peanuts per annum; you cannot divest because of the stock value erosion. But with just 12 thousand Naira invested in our Project Management class, you may experience exponential financial growth. (lol)

Gr8 TechniqueSincerely, how you spend is more important than what you earn. I have been a victim of “penny wise, pound foolish” or like I clearly stated as the subject-head; “kobo wise, naira foolish”. Review the picture above, we spend so much protecting worthless things. In view of the asset thingy, we mostly spend on things that will not bring a return (asset definition) but we stick to it based on friend’s recommendation (peer pressure) and we expect to make wealth (Nigerian reality).

Ok, let me cut to the chase of this “kobo wise, naira foolish” thingy – I drive very fast whenever I travel – on returning to Lagos from Ibadan on a 160km per hour, I was arrested by traffic along the “Berger Bus Stop” and was forced to slow down considerably. I was pissed but I held my cool. About 5 minutes into the traffic, the front tyre by the driver’s side busted and went considerably flat. At that moment I realized how God saved me with something that pissed me off.

Flat Tyre 300x269I got home in one piece after an embarrassing and arduous task of putting the extra tyre. I realized how stupid it was to be driving the way I did – I was really shaken with the whole event that I promised not to buy “second-hand” tyres any more. On buying the tyres, I was told the problem was the rim not the tyres. The rim got so hot with the long journey and speed that it transferred the heat to the tyre causing the bust. So I changed the rim to steel rim and changed the tyres. About 45 minutes into buying the new tyres, I realize my tyre was deflating. This time it was a huge nail!

I was grateful this did not take place at the third mainland bridge or in the dark when the “owners of the land” would have accosted me. I seriously started thinking of a tyre solution that will prevent nails and also reduce heat transfer from the rim. Just as if the “law of attraction” sets in; a very dear friend introduced me to a product called Tyre Sealant. He used his Pajero to climb 8 big nails nailed to a wood without the tyre deflating and I was sold. It is a preventive measure to use before you get a flat tyre. It is a non-toxic, non flammable formulation which is installed inside the tire and remains there for the life of the tire, additionally helping reduce air loss from the bead and throughout the rubber itself.
