SUBSTANCE vs. SHADOW

200px-Pretty_woman_movie.jpg“I love you”

These are the words of my wife to me every morning for the past 3 days. Since she is part of the female specie that is known to be generally more reactive than proactive in such matters, it got me thinking. Then the answer came as soon as I started my journey into “thoughtland”. She was very glad that I was supporting her dream; she (a biochemist) wanted to own an ice cream business and wanted to start by being a distributor for existing ice cream makers. She has already resigned from her place of work and has started getting in touch with retailers in the same business. I have never seen her so passionate about something but I was glad she was now because she definitely missed the point. I was ready to drop the capital because of my own selfish interest.

Ever since I started my MBA programme, I have been looking for scenarios to experiment my knowledge and since I was still below 30, I wanted to acquire the real life business skill of formulating models, strategies, processes and tactics to run my future companies. I see myself running different companies where I would definitely not be a visible actor but prefer operating from the background by placing various fronts to act on my behalf while I go about writing my dream novels and books and converting them into mini series or blockbuster films. This is simply my dream to empower lives through celestial information trapped in various platforms like DVDs, books and God knows the new technology that may come while I go about creating jobs and value to humanity.

When my wife brought the proposal to me, it coincided with the simulation assignment I was giving in my MBA programme. In the simulation, I was expected to run a company profitable for 1 year using different quarterly statement to reflect on my decisions and I was in competition with 9 other companies. It was quite an interesting way to learn business by actually applying all you have been taught in a simulation programme. The simulation allows you to forecast, hire your staff, advertise, and sell to retailers, loan money from the bank and every other thing that a company needs to become profitable. My first attempt recorded a huge loss with my company ranking number 10 in my industry but on a second go, I was able to adapt and eventually won the 9 other companies with a huge margin. I learnt a lot while playing with this simulation and I wanted to practice it real life in preparation for my life goals.

When she brought the proposal, I was ready to run with it because it replicates the exact model of the simulation and I know through this simile small business of pushing your products to retailers to sell would develop in me a life skill I was always dreaming of. I have used different models to run different set-ups; Dipo Tepede. POeT has been a very profitable venture, my first book titled “POeT Manual” has been very lucrative and now running my wife’s ice cream business at the background would solidify and prepare me for the much needed step to my dream.

This is what is referred to as substance; this is what King David did before he became king by killing the lions and the deers that tormented his father’s sheep. He was substantiating his hope and this is what is referred to as faith (substance of things hoped for and providing evidence to the unseen). This is why putting my money in risky schemes does not align with my dreams because the whole essence of making money without value is simply a shadow. There is a proliferation of these schemes available everywhere and everyone is excited about it. You may check comments on “NOSPETCO!”, to see newly bred schemes. People engage in this scheme are interested in outsmarting the system (which is not bad) but which does not substantiate their dreams. The argument would then suffice; when we make the money we would chase the dream. This is my final word to such discuss; money is never enough!

“Narrow is the way that leads to life while the wide leads to destruction” – Jesus Christ

On a final note, my best film in the 90s is “Pretty Woman” and the most interesting part was when Stuckey, Edward’s Lawyer came in after the meeting with Edward and the Morses. Richard Gere known as Edward in the film wanted to buy off the company and sell it piece by piece but he changed his mind. When the Stucky asked what was going on and the old man responded by saying “Mr. Lewis and I are going to build ships together”. This simply explains how a hard hearted intent of buying off a company for money alone was changed to buying off a company with the intent of making everybody happy including the employees. Edwards mindset was changed from just obtaining money without providing value. Edward now wanted to leave the shadow and chase the substance. Stay hooked dear, because this is just the intro to a series I would be writing – Substance vs. Shadow; it promises to be very exciting and revelatory! Check out for Part 2……………………
