I am scheduled to speak to Youth Corpers in Ijebu Ode zone this morning on the topic; “Begin to draw your own map, be your boss” in the LIFE AFTER NYSC seminar powered by Institute for Enterprise Development (IED). The topic is so fascinating with a catchy clause – if I was a youth corper in that zone, this will be a must-attend. However, as a speaker, this is a very confusing topic to handle because of the subtleties surrounding the topic – I want to advise youths who have never been properly governed on the act of governance in this knowledge worker age.
First is the concept of Boss. As an employee of an MNC, I use to have 2 bosses – a line Manager and the Functional Manager of my department. I used to dread these periods because I believed my creativity were hindered and wished I were my own boss, which I translated to mean entrepreneurship (Being on My Own). The first sentence I mentioned when I gathered enough liver to resign was; “Free at Last!” What followed next, can not be described hence appreciated by those who have never left the comfort and securities of a lucrative job. Fast forward to present day as an entrepreneur, I have come to the conclusion that success in entrepreneurship means having myriads of bosses in the form of customers and suppliers.
If it is in terms of bosses, employers of labor, get the wrong end of the stick. Hence, I will propose a new topic: “Begin to draw your own map, be indispensable”. It does not matter if you are an employee or employer, being indispensable is what guarantees freedom to peace – what we all consciously or unconsciously crave for – cloaked in wealth + passion + conscience.
Have a nice day!
