Pastor Poju Oyemade is more of a mentor to me than a pastor. Using our relationship as a case study for my write-up on mentorship – we have neither spoken to one another nor does he have the faintest ideas of who I am. I have studied and leant from him through his TV broadcast, CDs and live teachings. I know nothing about his personal life except what he chooses to reveal himself. In 2005, I was led to his church after 6 years with House on the Rock.
I remember my first day in his church like yesterday – it was a Tuesday evening – I remember parking my beat-up 3rd series BMW to a relatively empty parking lot. Prior to this visit, I had never attended a small church but I was 100% convinced this was where I was meant to be. The first thing that caught the attention of my fiancé (now my wife) and I, was the pastor arranging the chairs and checking the AC – this was a totally new experience and a helpful one in humility.
As an entrepreneur, I remembered watching his decision to have a second church on the island. The first-day venue was city mall and the ratio of number of attendees to the size of the church was very small. Despite this initial result, he did not back down on his dream to have an island church. This experience became very useful to my entrepreneurial decisions and exploit.
I regularly attend the island church but last Sunday I decided to visit the Yaba second service because of an appointment I had in the office. It took me more than 20 minutes to get a parking space as everywhere was filled. The only space I had was on the express road, which I gladly took. I experienced the growth of a church – the modern day multiplication of five loaves and a fish.
The church growth cycle impacted my life as an entrepreneur – as every step was valuable to me – from the initial faith seminars in his Yaba church to Muson Center to Lagoon restaurant, platform, soccer league, health campaigns to recent West Africa Faith Believers Conference (WAFBEC). This was why I was so glad when he announced that this Sunday, he will be sharing his experience and what God taught him about the Perfect Law of breakthrough.
For those who are interested in personal effectiveness and growth, this Sunday (3rd of March, 2013) is a must for you.
