The PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) 5th Edition will be released on the 31st of December 2012. I am eager to read this document and to analyze the gap difference from the 4th edition especially the exams. The change in the exam on the 31st of August 2011 has increased the difficult level by about 20% with 39% failure rate by design for the old exam.
Now, from the 31st of July, 2013, PMI credential candidates will not be allowed to take the PMBOK 4th edition exams leaving a window of about 8-months to take the soon-to-be old exams. Now these are the appropriate forecast that I envision:
- With limited Prometric Exam centers in Nigeria (just 3 – 2 in Lagos and 1 in Abuja), exam dates will be over-booked. If I take statistics from my own PMP Prep Class, only 10% of those that come for training quickly take the exam leaving about 90% laggards who will now have to struggle for the remaining 8-months window to justify their 4th edition training cost.
- Already about 66.6% of Nigerians fail the exam at first try. With increase pressure to take the exam and scarcity of space due to limited venue and recertification, the failure rate will definitely increase.
- Another issue worth reviewing is the auditing process, which takes a minimum of 2 weeks if you use fast courier mail service + the 1 week application process. With huge application from all over the world due to deadline pressure, there will be an increase in schedule. Do not forget your study time.
