The more I meditate on financial freedom for all, the more it appears like an illusion; an unattainable reach. “The poor we would always have†is a statement made by Jesus Christ. In making this statement, Jesus attacked the mindset of always trying to save everybody from being poor. In a recent speaking engagement to a Christian body, I was challenged by one of the delegates on wealth creation. The challenge itself was a welcome development because of the docile attitudes of the average Christians but the premise in which the challenge stemmed from was the same mindset of the disciples who saw an expensive perfume poured on the feet of Jesus.
The greatest issue we have as descendants of Abraham is the interpretation of scriptures. The separation between the Christians and the Jews is the interpretations of Isaiah’s prophesy concerning the coming of a king that would salvage them. Thus, we realize that prejudiced and wrongful interpretation is very feasible in our world today – Catholics, Anglicans, Mormons, Evangelicals, etc. It is easy for one to get confused so it is preferable to choose the element of fruitfulness. This is an undeniable element all over the world amongst various sects of belief. An effective man holds more sway than a prophesied believer thus have much influence.
Financial freedom itself is quite useless without influence. Jesus explained this succinctly when a man became so wealthy that he stored his wealth for the benefit of taking care of himself. The end goal of financial freedom is influence thus is it possible to have influence without financial freedom? The answer to this question is a big NO – you need to be financially free to influence. The question would then be; “what is financial freedom?†The easiest way to look at this is from the etymology of the word itself – “financial freedom†– free from finances. Jesus brought forth an important statement; “it is impossible to serve both God and moneyâ€. You cannot serve anything bigger than you if money is your problem.
I know you can start thinking of so many guys you know who do not have much money but have influence. This is the misconception about financial freedom – the first thing you think about is money. Having money in itself does not make you financially free. Financial freedom is achieved when the asset you have can take care of your expenses. The expense thus becomes the variable – your expense is the challenge not the asset. Our desire for more expense kills contentment. This is why the desire to serve God is hindered by your desire for more expense. If you desire more expense, you need to increase your asset. This is where the issue lies – most youths find it difficult to generate asset for their increased expense so they become financial slaves.
