Why You Hate That JOB?

“First you hate it, then you get used to it and after you depend on it.” These were wise words from Morgan Freeman’s character “Red” in one of the best movies of all time – Shawshank Redemption. This is the feeling that the average executives get about their workplace. The first two years could be challenging enough to master the workplace and after mastery comes boredom with cyclical repetition of the same role – again and again! It’s time to get out of the “prison” that you have come to hate before you depend on it absolutely for survival.

The problem is neither with the work nor the company – every company has its own share of challenges. The issues lies within you for having no set goals concerning your contribution to the company and what you hope to get from such partnership. Myopically, most people look to salary as a defining metrics for their choice of workplace, which in itself may not be a sustaining motivation for the boredom you will eventually encounter.

“How long do you plan to work in that company?” “What are skills you want to have mastered while working there?” “What transferable skills have you developed to work in your next dream company?” These questions will surely give you hope towards drudgery.

Another way to get past the “hate” which will eventually lead to “dependence” is to have a personal development plan concerning your career. “How many book(s) in a month should I be reading to move me towards becoming an expert in my field?” “How many training and certification should I invest in a year that will be an asset towards my career?” “Who should I deliberately align myself to (either physically or through non-physical medium) that will act as a mentor towards the goal I need to achieve at a particular phase of my life?”

Pre-job goals and post-job personal development plans are the panacea to hating that job.
